WWE Wanted Steve Austin To Wrestle At SummerSlam 2022

The rumors continue to swirl about Steve Austin potentially wrestling again in WWE as a new report has details about the company wanting him to wrestle at SummerSlam last year.

One of the biggest stories in pro wrestling in 2022 was Steve Austin’s in-ring return at WrestleMania 38 when he defeated Kevin Owens in the night one main event. Austin was 57 years old at the time match and it was 19 years after his last match at WrestleMania 19 in 2003. Austin looked good in the match, the fans loved it and it led to speculation that there would be more matches.

Over this past week, there were more reports of Steve Austin having matches with Fightful reporting that Austin was pitched for a match against Roman Reigns while the Wrestling Observer noted that Austin was pitched for a match with Brock Lesnar as well.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (available by subscription) by Dave Meltzer mentioned that WWE wanted Stone Cold to wrestle at SummerSlam last July 30th in Nashville, but obviously, that didn’t happen.

“Fightful reported a story this past week regarding the potential of a Reigns vs. Austin main event at WrestleMania this year.”

“The story is that match was pitched to Austin as recently as a few weeks ago. We’ve been told that the main idea dating back for Austin this year was a match with Lesnar, with the original hope and idea being Austin vs. Lesnar and Reigns vs. The Rock as the main events for the two nights. Austin vs. Lesnar has fallen through and Reigns vs. Rock appears to have been as well.”

“WWE had also talked of getting Austin for another match at SummerSlam last year and the attempt for this year for Mania was to get him with Lesnar, with the idea of it being a first-time ever dream match. Unlike with Reigns, who has several potential opponents, Lesnar had no obvious major first-time opponent that would be as big a deal as Austin in that spot.”

Whether Austin appears at the Royal Rumble this Saturday in San Antonio is unknown and the same goes for WrestleMania 39 on April 1st and 2nd. Time will tell if Austin chooses to wrestle again or if he is content with never wrestling again.
