WWE Re-Signs Alberto Del Rio
Alberto Del Rio is back.
Ahead of WrestleMania 41 night one, WWE announced the acquisition of the famous Mexican Promotion AAA. Michael Cole broke the news during the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, shortly after a new Worlds Collide event involving talent from NXT and AAA was announced.
Although the deal isn’t expected to be officially completed until the third quarter of 2025, major changes are already underway.
According to a new report from Ernesto Ocampo of SUPER LUCHAS magazine, the following names have been signed by WWE. While the additions of Vikingo and Wagner were expected, a deal for Del Rio had largely been seen as impossible.
It’s been repeatedly reported that WWE had no interest in bringing back Alberto Del Rio, with one source noting there was “no f*cking way” he’d return. However, WWE’s new deal with AAA has shifted the landscape significantly.
- Alberto del Río
- Hijo de Dr. Wagner
- Hijo del Vikingo
- La Parka
- La Hiedra
- Lady Flammer
- Lady Maravilla
- Niño Hamburguesa
Interestingly, Del Rio is now listed in the alumni section of WWE’s website after having been removed previously. While this isn’t confirmation of a deal, it does suggest that the company has changed its stance on the star.
Alberto Del Rio No Stranger To WWE Or Controversy
After competing in a dark match and making an on-screen cameo, Alberto Del Rio officially signed with WWE in 2009. The star went on to win Money In The Bank and the Royal Rumble, as well as capturing the United States Championship twice while becoming a four-time World Champion.
However, Del Rio was released by the company in August 2014, reportedly due to “unprofessional conduct.”
The star has since continued his career with the likes of Ring of Honor, Lucha Underground, TNA, and more while making a short return to WWE in 2015. During a one year run back with the company he was suspended for violating its wellness policy before requesting his release.
Away from the ring, Del Rio has been subject to several claims of domestic and physical abuse, including by former WWE and AEW star Saraya.
In 2020, Del Rio was arrested after being accused of sexual assault and battery. Later that year, he was indicted by a grand jury and charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. The case was ultimately dismissed after a witness failed to appear in court.
Aside from the controversy surrounding Del Rio in particular, the reported new deals come just days after WWE released a host of main roster and NXT talents, as well as firing several office and backstage staff.
