AEW Champion Recalls Getting Heat For Being “Chosen One” In WWE NXT

A current AEW wrestler has recalled a time earlier in his career when he had heat with other WWE NXT superstars.

The AEW Trios Tag Team Champions are the group known as House of Black with their leader Malakai Black along with Brody King & Buddy Matthews. They are also joined by Julia Hart.

That trio has dominated nearly every team put in front of them while holding the AEW Trios Tag Team Trios since March, which means over three months.

Prior to his AEW debut as Malakai Black in July 2021, the veteran Dutch wrestler had a run in WWE from 2016 to 2021 as Aleister Black.

While Aleister Black was on the WWE main roster for part of his reign, the place where he had the most success was on NXT. When he joined the brand, there was a lot of excitement because NXT was at its absolute best in the mid-to-late 2010s, and adding a veteran like Black to the mix only enhanced the roster. He would go on to hold the NXT Title for over 100 days in 2018.

During an appearance on The Undisputed Podcast, Malakai Black recalled when some people felt like he was a “chosen one” on NXT, which made some people not like him.

“I remember when I was the quote-unquote, like, chosen one in NXT and I did not have a lot of friends because everybody wanted to be the chosen one, you know what I mean?”

“I had a lot of people that did not like me because of that and I was just going like, ‘I’m sorry guys. I didn’t do anything on purpose’.”

“But it was just the way that the industry was at the time and what the quote-unquote machine picked at that time.”

Malakai Black also recently stated that he requested that he be exclusive to AEW Collision rather than being on multiple TV shows in a given week.
