WWE Backstage Interest In Re-Signing 4-Time World Champion
It seems WWE has an interest in bringing back a hugely controversial four-time world champion to the company.
Ahead of WrestleMania 41 night one, WWE announced the acquisition of the famous Mexican Promotion AAA. Michael Cole broke the news during the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, shortly after a new Worlds Collide event involving talent from NXT and AAA was announced.
It’s been repeatedly reported that WWE had no interest in bringing back Alberto Del Rio, who has been a featured star in AAA in recent years, with one source noting there was “no f*cking way” he’d return.
But could WWE really have an interest in bringing him back?
Many In WWE Have An Interest In Alberto Del Rio
AAA executive Ernesto Campo spoke to Superluchas, and gave some insight into Del Rio’s future after he was sent into AAA exile after losing a match to El Mesias and indicated WWE has an interest in bringing him back:
What I know is that there are no plans for him to go to the U.S., but that could change. He is expected to return to AAA programming. Many in WWE want him back on the main roster.
He might have been a four-time world champion in WWE, but Del Rio has been dogged with issues outside of the ring that have caused him to be toxic to many.
In 2020, Del Rio was arrested after being accused of sexual assault and battery. Later that year, he was indicted by a grand jury and charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. The case was ultimately dismissed after a witness failed to appear in court.
