WWE Planning Drew McIntyre Return For Major Show

The WWE television return of Drew McIntyre could be happening at one of their major Premium Live Events in the near future.

At WrestleMania 39 in April, Drew McIntyre competed in an incredible triple threat match for the Intercontinental Championship with the champion GUNTHER and Drew’s best friend Sheamus. They would go on to have one of the best matches of the year with GUNTHER finding a way to win to continue his impressive reign as the champion.

Since then, the former two-time WWE Champion McIntyre has been absent from television for over two months.

In addition to that, it has been reported that McIntyre’s WWE contract is set to expire in early 2024 and there are apparently concerns about his creative direction in the company. This has led to speculation that McIntyre could be willing to leave WWE if he’s not happy about how he’s being used in the company.

Earlier this week, there was a report from PWInsider that WWE is hoping to have Drew McIntyre back for the Money in the Bank Premium Live Event in London, England in two weeks on July 1st. Considering McIntyre is from Scotland, it’s likely that if he did appear at the show, he would get one of the loudest reactions from the fans in the United Kingdom.

The latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer has more information on Drew McIntyre’s WWE return while also confirming that PWInsider story.

“There has been talk about getting Drew McIntyre back for the show, although there is no obvious opponent for him. There is interest in getting McIntyre back for the 7/1 Money in the Bank show, which makes sense. PWInsider reported meetings and creative pitches for him took place last week and others close to the situation confirmed that to us that it was accurate.”

“He had been banged up and took time off after WrestleMania but wanted creative locked in place before returning. The logical role is as a heel working with Rollins. The basic gist is that from his standpoint he wants to make sure everything is locked in because unless a new deal is reached it would be his last run at this time and wanted it to have impact. Of late his family has been dealing with the heartbreaking death of his sister-in-law, who was only 36, which has been his family’s prime concern in recent weeks.”

While his official WWE TV return is unknown, the company is promoting Drew McIntyre heavily for an appearance at the Special Olympics World Games 2023 in Berlin from June 17th to 25th.
