There will be a title match in the main event of WrestleMania 39 night one, but it isn’t necessarily the match that some people were expecting.

With just over two weeks to go until WrestleMania 39 takes place on April 1st and April 2nd, it is getting close to the time when WWE will announce what matches will take place on Saturday (April 1) and what matches will take place on Sunday (April 2).

It is expected that Roman Reigns defending the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Men’s Royal Rumble match winner Cody Rhodes in the main event on Sunday, April 2nd. Cody Rhodes seemed to confirm that on Raw this past Monday when he mentioned April 2nd multiple times. Plus, that has been the spot for the Roman Reigns title defense in the last two years.

As for what will main event night one of WrestleMania 39 on April 1st, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting that Charlotte Flair defending the Smackdown Women’s Title against Women’s Royal Rumble winner Rhea Ripley is expected to be in the main event spot.

“It appears to be official at this point that the two WrestleMania main events will be Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley on 4/1, which will also include Seth Rollins vs. Logan Paul, and Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes on 4/2.”

“We had reported weeks back that Reigns vs. Rhodes was the night two main event and that Flair vs. Ripley was favored to be the night one main event. When we had asked about Usos vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn headlining night one, since at the time Zayn was the company’s hottest babyface character, we were told that there were political reasons in play to where Flair vs. Ripley would most likely get that spot.”

It was also mentioned by Meltzer that if The Rock was wrestling Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 then there would likely be a completely different match as the night one main event.

“It is not clear that the Usos match will be on night one, but when the original idea was to create a second world title, with Rollins, Drew McIntyre or Rhodes (Rhodes would be in this if The Rock was facing Reigns) as the three people considered for it, that was to be the night one main event, but it became the women’s match when that idea fell by the wayside. At that point in time, the Usos title defense was scheduled for night one.”

It is not known what the “political reasons” are for putting Flair and Ripley in the main event of night one, but it could just be a case of WWE wanting both Royal Rumble winners in the main event and also wanting a women’s match to headline night one.

It’s not official yet, but WWE could certainly announce the two WrestleMania main events as soon as tonight’s episode of Smackdown or perhaps next Monday on Raw.
