Will Ospreay Reveals Forbidden Door 2022 Match Wasn’t Original Plan

With the second edition of AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door a month or so away, fans are wondering what Will Ospreay will be doing.

When the first Forbidden Door was announced, many fans wanted to see one of many possible dream matches between Ospreay and AEW’s top stars. Fans threw out names like CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Kenny Omega, and many others.

But Will Ospreay didn’t face any of those big names. Instead, he faced Orange Cassidy who, despite being over with AEW’s audience, wasn’t considered as much of a “dream opponent” for the British wrestler.

As it turns out, Cassidy was never Will Ospreay’s intended opponent; his name was thrown out at the last minute due to a dearth of available challengers.

In a Twitter conversation with Dark Puroresu Flowsion, an account that specializes in translating Japanese wrestling talk into English, Ospreay revealed that his match with Orange Cassidy happened because the big names originally discussed for him were injured.

“The original plans for FD were built around the matches you could get outta Bryan, Omega & Punk. So once they all weren’t clear it was wide open. OC doesn’t get his flowers, he is truly great.”

Ospreay did end up having that much-anticipated singles match with Kenny Omega some months later at Wrestle Kingdom in January of this year.

As of this writing, no matches have been announced for the Forbidden Door show taking place in June in Toronto.
