Why WWE Was Forced To Pull The Plug On Controversial Gimmick
A former WWE writer recently revealed the real reason why the company had to pull the plug on one of its most controversial gimmicks.
Dustin Rhodes debuted the gimmick of Goldust upon his return to the Stamford-based company in 1995 after a four-year run in WCW. The character was bold, sexual, and mysterious. It quickly got over with the WWE Universe.
However, former head writer Vince Russo recently revealed in his interview with -7 Sports why the company was forced to pull the plug on the gimmick at its peak.
It was not by choice but when Goldust was in his prime and when he was a heel, I think he could have been huge. But, you know, WWE got a little scared because, you know, sponsors and advertisers really didn’t understand the character at all. So because of that, we had to pull the plug. If we would have been able to present Goldust in the way we wanted to, I think it would have been over 10 times more than he is. [16:30 onwards]
Vince Russo Will Never Return To WWE
During the same interview with -7 Sports, former WWE head writer Vince Russo disclosed that he would never return to the Stamford-based company under any circumstances.
The wrestling veteran claimed a comeback would require him to “fall in line,” which he would never do.
Never happening, bro. Never never happening, bro. I swear to God, bro, they could offer me millions of dollars. Because here’s what we spoke about earlier, bro. If you ever put Vince Russo in that system, bro, you’re not gonna control me. I’m not a robot. I’m not one of your NXT kids. I’m not 20some years old. I’m not gonna fall in line. You’re not gonna control me. And that’s what they want.
So, bro, that’s why, like, I would never for all the money in the world ever put myself in that situation because I would know that’s what they would want to do. And I’m a creative guy, bro. It ain’t gonna happen. And I’m not gonna kiss your a**. I’m not gonna kowtow. I’m not gonna fall in line. If you pitch something that I think sucks, I’m gonna tell you it sucks. And, bro, that would be the world’s biggest freaking nightmare.
