Vince McMahon Refused WWE Star’s Retirement
One WWE Hall of Famer has revealed that Vince McMahon wouldn’t let them retire from the ring and instead ended up signing a new multi-year deal.
One of the most famous moments in recent WWE history came when Mark Henry shed tears in a salmon suit jacket as he announced his retirement from the ring. However, it all proved to be a very believable ruse as Henry blindsided then WWE Champion John Cena leading to a huge title match between the two men.
However, it seems if Henry had his way, the retirement would have been real. Vince McMahon had other ideas.
Vince McMahon Rejected Retirement Pitch
Speaking to Poker Scout, Mark Henry explained what led to his ‘Hall of Pain’ era in the company and explained how Vince McMahon used his famous mind tricks to not only talk Henry out of retiring but also signing a new three-year deal:
It was mostly all me. I was ready to retire and I wanted to retire and be able to go home and spend more time with my family. And Vince just said, ‘Man, you’re still too young. You can’t retire now, there is a lot left in the tank, you need to reconsider.’
So we spoke for probably another hour of him trying to get me not to pack it up and go home. And I don’t know how it happened but I ended up walking outta there with a three year deal to keep wrestling and that’s when everything changed and then me attacking John Cena started.
So there was a lot to say and Vince just knew that it would be a good deal because I had been telling people for a year that I was retiring and he was like, ‘Let’s just play it. Let’s just play it.’ And we did and got a great result.
Vince McMahon is still facing legal action over sexual abuse allegations stemming from his time in charge of WWE.
