Triple H Turned Down Major Cody Rhodes Request Involving John Cena
Triple H turned down a story pitched by Cody Rhodes involving John Cena.
Cena, who is on his retirement tour, was returning on the WWE RAW Netflix debut episode on January 6 for the first time since announcing his retirement at the 2024 Money in the Bank PLE.
Rhodes, who has been a top babyface since his own return to the company in 2022, proposed an angle that required Cena to be ‘saved.’
This revelation occurred in the first episode of WWE: Unreal, the company’s latest docuseries, giving fans behind-the-scenes action leading up to WrestleMania 41.
Triple H Felt The Segment Undermined John Cena
In the scene, Triple H is seen in a discussion with WWE VP Creative Writer, Jonathan Baeckstrom, after Cody Rhodes pitched him the idea.
Triple H: Cody wants it, like, they all square up to f**king, you know, take Cena down and Cody runs in and f**king makes the save.
Jonathan Baeckstrom: Totally understood obviously. One of the biggest shows in company history. Cody is our f**king franchise player. Every reason to have him on the show. We don’t have a half a dozen heels who are just… Everybody’s got a story. Like, we’re gonna chunk Judgment Day out there?
Triple H: Also, and I get Cody’s point of view, but also like, you know, it’s the first time we see John Cena in what, a year? But, like, the first time he comes out and, like, somebody’s gotta save him, it just feels off to me too.
The WWE Chief Content Officer believed it showed Cena as weak. The pitch never made it to taping, with both superstars appearing in separate segments.
While John Cena announced his availability for the Men’s Royal Rumble match, Rhodes shared the screen with The Rock.
