WWE star Jey Uso is having a hard time connecting with the fans.

There was a time when Jey was a fan favorite of the WWE Universe. However, there has been a concerning decline in his popularity recently.

Uso’s babyface character is drawing a lot of fan criticism lately for feeling repetitive, overexposed, and lacking depth despite his Royal Rumble win and World Heavyweight Championship reign earlier this year.

Jey Uso Turning Heel In WWE Is Not Enough

Speaking on his Story Time podcast, veteran Dutch Mantell discussed Jey Uso facing stagnancy in WWE. Mantell suggested that Uso needs a drastic change if he wants to become popular among the fans.

I think he’s hit the high spot, the high moment, the high water mark. And I think they need to make a drastic change. But I don’t think the people would accept the change.

When asked if Jey turning heel might help his character development, Mantell suggested that it won’t be enough. Uso needs to do more, like go after the biggest babyface or heel in the company, to completely transform his character and become a fan favorite again.

So what then? Now you’re asking them to say, “Well, we like the guy, and now he does something, and now we’re not supposed to like him.” The crowd, when they figure out what’s going on, they will cheer him more. Really. And so you put him against the biggest heel, the biggest baby face, and they may cheer him. (From 5:39)

In the same podcast, Dutch Mantell also discussed Jey teasing a heel turn. After Uso lost his match against LA Knight in the Last Time Is Now Tournament, he threw a “little hissy fit,” which Mantell believes could be a strong indication that he might tap into his darker side very soon.
