Tony Schiavone Reflects On The Moment He Realised He Should Have Never Left WWE

Legendary announcer Tony Schiavone has opened up about his regrets concerning a career-defining decision made over three decades ago. Schiavone, whose voice has become synonymous with wrestling commentary, recently shared his misgivings about leaving WWE for rival promotion WCW in 1990, a move he says he questioned almost immediately.

During a candid discussion on his podcast “What Happened When,” Schiavone delved into the circumstances surrounding his departure from WWE after just one year with Vince McMahon’s organisation. The renowned announcer, now a pivotal voice in AEW, painted a vivid picture of the stark contrasts he encountered upon his return to WCW.

When I came back to WCW and sat in with Jim Herd, Jim Barnett – listening to Herd and Barnett talk and then being downstairs… it was like, the WWE’s production facility was gigantic and WCW’s production facility was really small.

This disparity in resources and infrastructure became glaringly apparent to the seasoned commentator, causing him to question his decision almost immediately. Schiavone’s experience highlights the significant gap that existed between WWE and WCW in terms of production capabilities and overall presentation.

And just now working in a very small production facility, compared to what I was working in before, and listening to Herd and Barnett talk, that combination just kind of threw a wrench in me.

However, Schiavone noted how technological advancements have transformed the industry in the decades since his fateful decision.

What’s kind of odd now is that thanks to technology today, you don’t need a gigantic production facility like you used to have and can do things on computers and laptops if you have enough hard drive space… it’s just amazing.

This revelation from Tony Schiavone offers insight into the professional considerations that shape the careers of those behind the microphone. It also serves as a reminder of how far the industry has come in terms of production capabilities and the evolving landscape of wrestling entertainment.
