Tony Khan Pays Tribute To WWE Legend
Tony Khan has a lot of respect for one of WWE’s greatest stars.
There are very few people within the industry who love professional wrestling as much as Tony Khan. Although he now oversees AEW, Khan has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of the business, spending his youth studying wrestling history and learning everything he could about the stars of years gone by.
So perhaps it should be no surprise that Khan is a big fan of one of the hardest-working stars of the modern era.
On December 13, John Cena will bring down a curtain on an in-ring career that saw him dominate pro wrestling in North America and become one of the biggest stars on the planet. Cena’s natural charisma and incredible work ethic have taken him to 17 World Championships and countless other honours. But unlike many of his contemporaries, he now gets the chance to say goodbye on his terms.
Tony Khan Tips Hat To John Cena
During a new interview with Josh Martinez of Z100 New York, Tony Khan was asked about Cena’s impending retirement and pro wrestling legacy. The AEW boss was quick to praise Cena, describing him as a legend. He added that he has a huge amount of respect for the star, even though they’ve never met.
“Wow. I wasn’t expecting that, but it was a great question. John Cena’s absolutely a legendary pro wrestler who came into the space and became a huge star very quickly on television because he has so much charisma, and he’s one of the hardest working people, as far as I know, in pro wrestling.
I’ve never actually met John Cena, and I have a ton of respect for him as a wrestler. He seems like a wonderful person. Everybody I know that’s worked with John Cena has only the very, very best things to say about him, and he’s known for being the utmost professional. I think he’s also a very, very talented actor. I’m a huge fan of the Peacemaker show on HBO Max.
AEW Full Gear is presented by DC. DC, being the presenting sponsor, we had a great partnership going with DC. So even though I’ve never worked with John Cena in any wrestling capacity, we are partners now with DC. So that may be as close as we ever get. But, I think that he’s absolutely fantastic in the ring and he seems fantastic out of the ring.
Certainly on screen, one of the all-time greats, and he came into the wrestling business after many of the top stars were either getting ready to retire or entering the final phase of their career and he really stepped up as one of the biggest wrestling stars of all time and even though I’ve never met him or talked to him, I have a ton of respect for him.”
In the same interview, Tony Khan suggested that Britt Baker could still have a way back in AEW despite not appearing for the company in just under 12 months.
It’s long been rumoured that Baker will sign with WWE when free from her AEW deal. This speculation continued to gather pace in recent weeks when Baker removed all references to AEW on her social media accounts.
Despite the speculation, the former Women’s World Champion remains under contract until the fall of 2026.
