Tony Khan Open To Running All-Women’s AEW Show
Tony Khan could do more with the AEW women’s division.
On the October 22 episode of Dynamite, the bracket for the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship tournament was revealed.
The four-team tournament will see Jamie Hayter & Queen Aminata face Julia Hart & Skye Blue, with the winner meeting either Mercedes Mone & Athena or Willow Nightingale & Harley Cameron. On the other side of the bracket, Riho & Alex Windsor take on “Timeless” Toni Storm & Shirakawa, and Anna Jay & Tay Melo tackle Penelope Ford & Megan Bayne.
The tournament, along with the expected first-ever women’s Blood and Guts match, have been heralded as a big steps for the company, but more changes could be on the way.
Tony Khan Is Thinking Big
During an appearance on WFAA 8, Athena revealed that Tony Khan has thought about running an all-women’s show. She added that the creation of a potential show comes down to timing, but it’s something that Khan has been thinking about for several years.
“Absolutely. I know TK has absolutely thought about that; it’s just about timing when it comes to those things. We have the best roster in the world. I know everybody says it, but we actually do have the best roster in the world. I do know that is on his brain, it’s been on his brain since I have been in AEW at least. It’s just about timing.”
Athena is no stranger to all-women’s events after creating Who Runs The World? with her Metroplex Wrestling indie promotion. The second event to run under that banner will be held on October 25.
Back in AEW, Athena remains the ROH Women’s World Champion, extending her record as the longest-reigning World Champion in Ring of Honor history. As of October 23, the proud Texan has held the title for 1049 days.
