The WWE Hall Of Famer Who Nearly Caused The Undertaker To Crack Up On Camera
WWE Hall of Famer The Godfather recently appeared as a guest on the Six Feet Under With Mark Calaway podcast, where the details were revealed on a memorable incident where Godfather succeeded in breaking The Undertaker’s character on screen before one of their matches in 1998.
Reflecting on the episode, The Undertaker, recounted his thoughts as he prepared to work with The Godfather in his new persona.
Normally if I see my name on the page and I’m working with ‘Bear’ (Godfather), I’m thinking oh this is gonna be cake. But now he’s the Godfather, and I’m trying to figure out how I’m gonna work my character [around this] and I’m thinking my boy is gonna be alright and he’s gonna take care of me and instead this is what he does to me.
The incident transpired during a pre-match promo on an episode of WWE Sunday Night Heat in November 1998, where The Godfather, offered Taker, his “hos” for the night instead of engaging in a traditional wrestling match. The Godfather’s remarks came close to eliciting a character break from The Undertaker, who struggled to maintain his composure during the exchange.
I was biting my lips so bad. I was thinking of run over puppies and anything I could possibly think of to not to crack, cos I’m thinking this son of a b*tch…. I’m cussing him like a dog inside my head.
The Undertaker further revealed his reaction to The Godfather following their match, expressing his astonishment and frustration at the provocative promo.
I said ‘Man why you gotta do me like that. Nobody talks to the Undertaker like that, why you gotta bring up hos to the Undertaker’. And he’s just laughing, he was so proud of himself. And yeah it was close [for me to break].
Notably, The Undertaker’s near break from character was met with approval from Vince McMahon, as he appreciated any instance that came close to eliciting a crack in Taker’s persona.
Oh Vince loved it. Anything that was close to getting me to crack he was all over it.
The Bizarre Regret The Undertaker Still Has From WWE Career
The Undertaker recently revealed in an interview with Chris Van Vliet, one of the regrets in his career was when he wore snakeskin style trousers for a match with Kurt Angle at Survivor Series 2000, and set the record straight on whether they were his ring gear or he borrowed them from The Godfather as rumoured.
