The Undertaker Says Surprising WWE Hall Of Famer Came Up With Body Bag Idea

The Undertaker Young

The Undertaker has revealed that one of the most popular babyfaces in wrestling history suggested the body bag idea that Taker used in WWE.

Early on in The Undertaker’s 30-year run as a WWE superstar, part of his gimmick was to defeat his adversaries and then put them in a body bag after the match.

This would lead to The Undertaker carrying this man to the back and the idea was that Taker would “bury him” since that’s what the gimmick was. It was just all part of the show for the character in the early 1990s.

While speaking on his Six Feet Under with Mark Calaway podcast, The Undertaker spoke about some of the guys he would talk to for advice.

“Guys like Arn Anderson. Not necessarily gimmick guys, but obviously I’m a gimmick. I think I had a pretty good handle on the gimmick but I always wanted to be more than the gimmick. I wanted to be a top wrestler as well as having this gimmick. Guys like Arn Anderson and Bret, guys like that would have been nice to have some of their feedback because they had a different insight on their approach.”

“They were such technicians. Those kind of guys, but everybody else, whatever. Not that there couldn’t have been some good critiques.”

“Triple H occasionally would offer things up and I always respected it because I felt like he had a really good eye not only for what he was doing. Even when he was just a talent, he had a pretty good grasp, especially of the top guys for what they were doing. He’s always been in that role of knowledge and having an understanding. I think he had a pretty good understanding of what I was trying to do, so if he had something, he would share it.”

Ricky Steamboat Pitched The Body Bag Idea To The Undertaker

When it comes to the post match body bag idea, credit for that goes to WWE Hall of Famer Ricky Steamboat, according to The Undertaker. That’s a name that might surprise people since Steamboat is known as one of the most popular babyfaces ever, but clearly, the idea worked.

“Ricky Steamboat came up with the idea of the body bag, of taking the body bags out and taking my beaten, prone opponents in a body bag and carrying them out. He just came up to me. He said, ‘Hey, did you ever think about doing this’, and I was like, this is genius.”

The “Dragon” Ricky Steamboat was in the later stages of his career when The Undertaker started in WWE in 1990 and after retiring, Steamboat worked with WWE for many years as a backstage producer as well.
