The Rock Vs. Roman Reigns Match Is “Not Off The Boards” For WrestleMania 39

The Rock with Roman Reigns

There is yet another update on the possibility of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson competing against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 next April.

As we head toward the end of 2022, there are a lot of rumors about the Royal Rumble and of course, WrestleMania 39 on April 1st and 2nd in Los Angeles. Ever since the Los Angeles WrestleMania event was announced, the rumored main event has been Roman Reigns facing his distant cousin, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Reigns is the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion that has held the Universal Title for well over 800 days with the belief being that The Rock would put over “The Tribal Chief” Reigns.

In an update on the situation, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer continued to make the point that if The Rock wants to do it then he’s in, but WWE also needs to know by a certain point if The Rock is going to be part of it.

“If Dwayne Johnson is on Mania, he’s wrestling Reigns. That is not off the boards at all, nor is it a lock. So there have to be back-up plans put in place. Right now if anyone says that there is a main event locked in for Mania, they are dead wrong because nothing is for certain. Basically, the idea is Dwayne Johnson has to make up his mind, and most likely a final date would best be just before the Rumble so they could start main event plans at the Rumble show.”

This is similar to what Meltzer wrote earlier in December when he said that WWE needs to know about Rock’s status by mid-January so that they can plan the Royal Rumble match accordingly.

In the Wrestling Observer two weeks ago, Meltzer noted that WWE was also considering having Reigns wrestle on both nights of WrestleMania. The scenario would see Reigns defend the WWE Title on the first night of WrestleMania against a current star like Cody Rhodes and then a Universal Title defense on the second night against The Rock. At the time, Meltzer wrote that it likely “won’t take place” like that, but there is always time for plans to change again.
