The Rock Reacts To Disappointing Box Office Numbers For “The Smashing Machine”
The Rock has made some comments following the underwhelming performance of his new movie at the box office.
For over 20 years, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has delivered numerous hits as one of the biggest box office draws in Hollywood. Some of those films may not be critically acclaimed as classics, but whenever Johnson was involved, many of them performed well, and a big reason for this is his involvement.
Whether current WWE fans like him or not, The Rock is legitimately one of the most famous people alive and the most successful pro wrestler ever outside of the business.
In The Rock’s new film called “The Smashing Machine,” Rock plays former MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Unlike some of his other films, The Rock has been praised heavily for his performance in “The Samshing Machine” because of how much he resembles Kerr, and also for being different from his regular appearance.
Unfortunately, “The Smashing Machine” was not a big hit at the box office. Deadline reported that The Smashing Machine’s opening weekend only netted $6 million, the lowest of The Rock’s Hollywood career. Taylor Swift’s “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” led the way over the weekend with over $34 million at the box office.
Although nominations have not been announced yet, there are rumors that The Rock could be nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for “The Smashing Machine,” and so could his co-star Emily Blunt. For Rock, it would be his first time earning an Oscar (Academy Award) nomination if it happens.
The Rock Maintains A Positive Attitude Despite “The Smashing Machine” Not Being Successful At The Box Office
While moviegoers may not be flocking to theatres to watch “The Smashing Machine” as much as many people had hoped, The Rock posted on Instagram about the film, thanking fans for their support, as well as everyone involved with it. According to WWE’s “Final Boss,” this movie has changed his life.
From deep in my grateful bones, thank you to everyone who has watched “The Smashing Machine”.
In our storytelling world, you can’t control box office results — but what I realized you can control is your performance, and your commitment to completely disappear and go elsewhere.
And I will always run to that opportunity.
It was my honor to transform in this role for my director Benny Safdie @bowedtie. Thank you brother for believing in me.
Truth is this film has changed my life.
With deep gratitude, respect and radical empathy,
