The Rock Reveals If He Has Any WWE Booking Influence
The Rock has addressed whether he has any say in what happens in WWE storylines.
It has been an interesting year for The Rock regarding his involvement with WWE. Early in the year, it appeared that he would be heavily involved again, as he was part of the epic John Cena heel turn at Elimination Chamber on March 1st.
Since that day, The Rock has largely avoided WWE, even though many people assumed he would be involved in WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. Instead, Rock didn’t even attend WrestleMania and has barely discussed WWE in public, despite being a member of TKO’s Board of Directors.
During an appearance on the New Heights podcast with Travis & Jason Kelce, The Rock admitted that while he does have some influence on WWE storylines, for some things, like John Cena’s retirement tour, they leave it up to Cena to decide on what he wants to do.
“I have a tiny bit of influence in the booking of it. But really it’s just, it’s whoever John wants. Really, that’s what it comes down to. Whoever he wants.
It’s not me or Nick Khan or Triple H. It’s just, it’s whoever John wants. That guy has earned it. And you know what? The best part about John is he comes as advertised. So who you think he is, that’s who he is. And he’s a good dude. And I love that guy. No, he’s a good dude, man. And kind. He’s really cool.”
Steve Austin Requested To Work With The Rock
When The Rock was early in his WWE career, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin saw something in him. After Austin won the WWE Title in 1998 at WrestleMania 14, he knew he needed a rival for the following year. By late 1998, Rock was a heel on the rise, and Austin made it clear to the bosses that he wanted to work with Rock. Recently, Rock told a story about that process.
“Speaking of good guys, this guy helped me so much, Mark. He was on top of the world. He saw just a little bit of potential in me, but also smart enough to know, he’s like, ‘Man, we got some chemistry, man. Me and you.’ And I was not in a position to say, ‘Hey, let’s me and you work together. Let’s go headline WrestleMania.’ He had to say it.
And he went on, he went to Vince McMahon in 1999, in January of 99, I think. He said, ‘I wanna main event WrestleMania with The Rock.’ The rest is history. We went on and I went on to have just the greatest rivalry with him.”
