Surprising Match To Headline WWE WrestleMania 39?

When Cody Rhodes won the men’s Royal Rumble upon his return to WWE, he booked himself a slot in the main event of WrestleMania 39.

Roman Reigns has made the Sunday night main event slot of WrestleMania his own in recent years, competing in the last match in 2021 against Daniel Bryan and Edge and in 2022 against Brock Lesnar.

Now Reigns and Rhodes will do battle in the main event of WrestleMania 39 on the Sunday night but with the full schedule of matches now being revealed on ESPN’s First Take, fans have been left scratching their heads about what’s going on last on Saturday.

Originally, the US Title match between John Cena and Austin Theory had been announced as the opening match of WrestleMania 39 but when the cards for Saturday and Sunday were announced it was noted that Theory and Cena were “headlining” night one. The graphic also featured them top of the card and pictures of both men as the Sunday graphic also featured Rhodes and Reigns.

Charlotte Flair defending her SmackDown Women’s Championship against Rhea Ripley had been expected to main event night one of WrestleMania 39 in a rematch from their bout at WrestleMania 36.

Fans had also clamoured for Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens taking on The Usos to main event the first night in what would be a fitting conclusion to Zayn’s story with The Bloodline.

It could be that either of those matches still main events the Saturday night but until WWE makes things clearer, there will be confusion. And eyebrows might be raised further over WWE CEO Nick Khan’s recent comments that Vince McMahon is “not that involved” with creative in the company should Theory and Cena go on last.

UPDATE – Fightful Select has now reported that WWE has confirmed that Austin Theory and John Cena will go on first as originally announced, hopefully clearing up any confusion from the graphic that was released.
