The Stupid Mistake That Left Eric Bischoff Injured In WWE
Eric Bischoff suffered an injury when taking a huge bump during his time as the WWE Raw GM, and he blames himself for it.
It was a major shock in the wrestling world when, in the summer of 2002, Vince McMahon revealed that Eric Bischoff would be the General Manager of the Raw brand.
The storyline was a big deal because in the late 1990s, Bischoff was the President of WCW, who led the company in the Monday Night Wars ratings battle that saw WCW Nitro beat WWE Raw for 83 weeks in a row, which was nearly two years.
After WWE bought WCW in March 2001, Bischoff no longer had WCW to run, so it was a smart business move to bring in Bischoff to run Raw since Bischoff was a fantastic on-air authority figure just like McMahon was.
During Eric Bischoff’s memorable three-year run as the WWE Raw GM, Kane had a storyline where he was unmasked for the first time on WWE TV in 2003. On the June 30, 2003 episode of Raw, the powerful (and demented) Kane gave Bischoff a brutal Chokeslam off the stage and through a table that was below. It was a big bump, especially for a non-wrestler like Bischoff.
Eric Bischoff Blames Himself For Injury On WWE Raw
While speaking on his 83 Weeks podcast, WWE Hall Of Famer Eric Bischoff admitted it was his fault for getting injured when Kane gave him that nasty-looking Chokeslam through a table.
“Off the stage … Kane, when he choke-slammed me off the stage [was the nastiest bump]. It was minor, but it was self-inflicted because I didn’t know how to take a bump. Especially off the stage, and I made a rookie mistake.
As I was going down — I was concentrated on tucking my chin and all that — I reached back to try to find the floor before I hit it, and when I did, I broke my thumb. Stupid, rookie mistake.”
While continuing to talk about taking bumps in the ring, Bischoff also recalled taking a Spear from Goldberg that could have been very painful as well, but thankfully, it didn’t hurt.
“I took a spear from Goldberg in WWE, and I should’ve positioned myself in the center of the ring, but I kinda pace when I cut promos and move around a lot, try to face different directions of the audience, and I had worked myself back towards the corner — too close to the corner — so when Bill [Goldberg] turned around and speared me, I didn’t leave myself any room to get blown back and I ended up bouncing my head off the bottom ring rope. It didn’t hurt — it didn’t knock me out.”
