Steve Austin Dismisses CTE’s Existence
WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin has gone on record to say that he does not believe in the chronic brain disease, CTE.
CTE is chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a disease thought to be linked to repeated blows to the head and concussions.
The disease came to the fore in the wrestling business following the murder/suicide of the Benoit family perpetrated by WWE star Chris Benoit. Benoit murdered his wife Nancy and son Daniel over a weekend in June 2007 before he died by suicide.
CTE and steroid abuse were part of the news cycle surrounding the tragic events with people looking for answers to why this happened.
Steve Austin Doesn’t Believe In CTE
In the new Mr. McMahon Netflix documentary the events were discussed with Vince McMahon dismissing the theories surrounding Benoit’s actions. The documentary discusses the effects of CTE with former WWE star Christopher Nowinski but Stone Cold Steve Austin is not convinced.
Pieced in the conversation surrounding CTE and Chris Benoit was a comment by Steve Austin where he went one step further than just suggesting CTE didn’t play a part in the Benoit murders, he said he didn’t believe in the disease full stop:
I worked for a long time, I got dropped on my head one time, I got concussed there. But other than that I can’t remember having too many concussions in the business of pro wrestling. My take on that has always been if you’re just wrestling and you got a bunch of concussions you’re probably doing something wrong. I’m not a CTE guy, I just don’t believe in it.
