Stephanie McMahon Loved Offensive Chant

Stephanie McMahon

Stephanie McMahon loves life as a heel.

Through the late 1990s, Stephanie McMahon began making ever more frequent appearances on WWE television. By mid-1999, McMahon was a regular presence and front and centre in storylines involving Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Test, her father Vince, brother Shane, and later Triple H.

This saw her marry Triple H on-screen before they officially became a couple, and their takeover of the company was completed at Armageddon that December. That resulted in the hated and now familiar Stephanie McMahon character established, and fans wasted little time in letting her know what they thought of her.

On the latest episode of her What’s Your Story? podcast, McMahon sat down with Paul Heyman to discuss all things WWE. This included the former Women’s Champion explaining why she loves being a heel.

“This is why I hate being a babyface. I think of myself as a babyface in real life. Maybe I’m not, but to be out there as a baby face is so tough. It’s so much easier to be a heel. It’s so much more fun… I hate it. Terrible. Despise it.”

McMahon added that the crass chants from fans were music to her ears after becoming a bad guy.

“My most like horrifying was, she’s got side meat… So mean… Chicago was ‘she’s a crack whore.’ Most everywhere else, it was ‘slut’… as soon as I turned heel, and it was so great.”

The star went on to recall her official heel turn at Armageddon, reiterating her joy at being called a slut. Pro wrestling is a wild place.

“It was at Armageddon, which was December of 99… the night that I did the heel turn and got with Paul [Triple H] in storyline… the next day… they came with the slut chant. And it was the greatest thing I had ever heard, because nobody else got chanted at that way, like, slut. I was like, what are they?

Fantastic arenas of people, 1000s of people chanting slut at me. It’s the best. That’s the greatest. I mean, who could say that? Not many people.”

Stephanie McMahon Given Special Instruction

During the same conversation, Stephanie McMahon and Paul Heyman recalled being pitted against one another while the former was Head Writer.

Heyman said he was told by Vince McMahon to “be the disruptor” and essentially be as difficult to manage for Stephanie in the writers’ room as possible. But little did he know, Vince had told Stephanie that she needed to “rein him in” and prove she was capable of managing big personalities.

Eventually, the pair worked out what had been going on with Stephanie, lashing out at Heyman before they got back on the same page.
