Sheamus Explains How He Trains Smarter

Sheamus has revealed what he does to stay in great shape as a WWE veteran that is putting on some of the best performances of his career.

It has been a great year for future WWE Hall of Famer Sheamus, who is one of the most decorated champions in the history of the company.

Over the course of his nearly 15-year WWE career, Sheamus has won the WWE & World Titles, the US Title, the Raw & Smackdown Tag Team Titles, King of the Ring, Money in the Bank and the Royal Rumble. The one major singles title that Sheamus hasn’t won is the Intercontinental Title.

At Clash at the Castle in September, Sheamus nearly won the IC Title when he competed against GUNTHER in a match that many people consider to be one of the best matches in WWE or any promotion this year. Even though he came up short in his quest to win back the IC Title, Sheamus received a standing ovation from the 60,000+ fans in attendance and ended up turning babyface after the match.

The 44-year-old Irishman explained to Men’s Health recently that he is training smarter so that he can keep wrestling at a high level.

“The older you get, the smarter you get. You have to know your limitations. So what do I want to do? Do I want to throw big, heavy weights around the gym? Do I want to start sumo squatting, like 600 pounds? Squat like 400 to 500 pounds? No, I don’t. I want my longevity. I want my workouts to compliment my ringwork. So I need to be smarter. So I don’t have any ego throwing weights around. I don’t need to do that anymore. To me, it’s how I look in there, how I move. I also want to look aesthetically good. So a lot of it is diet as well. So, you know, no sugar, cut back on alcohol—which obviously hasn’t gone well this last wedding week—got to get back on track with that because alcohol causes a lot of inflammation. So does sugar.”

As Sheamus alluded to, he recently got married with fellow WWE Smackdown star Drew McIntyre serving as his best man. The leader of the Brawling Brutes explained that WWE superstars can’t always do heavy workouts because they are always on the go.

“We have to be athletic. We do land on our back. We sometimes don’t have time to recover from big, heavy workouts because we’re on the road or we’re taking an early flight to the next city. So we get about 4 hours sleep, get on the plane, and then we’re wrestling.”

After being given a few weeks off for his wedding (the storyline reason was that he was attacked by The Bloodline), Sheamus returned to Smackdown on November 11th. The fella was joined by Butch & Ridge Holland as they battled The Bloodline and they were joined by McIntyre as well. It will likely lead to a WarGames match announcement between the two sides.
