Shawn Spears Reacts To Criticisms Of AEW’s Roster Being Too Big

Shawn Spears

Shawn Spears hit back at those critical of AEW having so many wrestlers on its roster.

With AEW President Tony Khan announcing new signings on a regular basis, some fans have been critical of the AEW roster’s ever-growing size, questioning the logic behind having so many wrestlers employed when there isn’t time to feature everyone on its weekly television.

However, according to Shawn Spears during a K&S WrestleFest event, having so many wrestlers on the roster means “a lot of people have jobs, a lot of people can feed their families.” Continuing, Spears explained that having a job beats being unemployed, even if that means not being featured regularly.

“They might not be working as regularly, or they might be gone for weeks at a time, but it is still better than the alternative, not having a job. It’s on the individual or the talent themselves to stay ready to be consistently trying to perfect their craft in any way shape or form,” Spears said. “When you get that call are you ready to go or not? That’s what you’re in control of, the rest is out of your hands.”

Shawn Spears himself is someone who’s featured only sporadically on AEW television, and his return to in mid-October marked his first appearance in months. After the show went off the air, he explained that he’d taken time away to deal with some things in his personal life, including losing his mother during that time. Spears is currently expecting his first child with former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Cassie Lee.
