Serious Issues Hurt AEW WrestleDream With Fans
AEW WrestleDream was a successful event, but the show also faced some challenges. There were major technical problems with the AEW pay-per-view broadcast on multiple platforms.
According to Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, Amazon Prime Video, one of the platforms showing the event, feed cut off at midnight, only a few minutes into the Jon Moxley vs. Darby Allin “I Quit” match. The cause was said to be a power failure in Amazon’s internal rebroadcast system (the system that distributes live video to viewers).
This failure didn’t just affect AEW; it also interrupted other live sports broadcasts happening at the same time. The feed also cut out during the Mercedes Mone vs. Mina Shirakawa match earlier in the night. Because of these outages, many customers complained and received refunds, which means AEW and Amazon both will lose money, so PPV revenue will drop compared to what it should have been.
Another provider that offered the AEW WrestleDream PPV, Comcast, had its own separate problem. The show was configured incorrectly in Comcast’s system, so many people couldn’t even buy the PPV at the start. Moreover, on HBO Max, the pre-show segment had no sound for some viewers. Fortunately, the sound problem was fixed before the actual PPV started, so it didn’t affect the main show.
Sting Made a Shocking Appearance at AEW WrestleDream
The main event of AEW WrestleDream saw Jon Moxley and Darby Allin fight each other in an “I Quit” match. Moxley’s teammates kept interfering in the match to tip the scales in his favor. But they were taken out by the legendary Sting, who made a shocking appearance to help his friend and former tag team partner Allin gain the momentum he needed and win the bout on Saturday.
The AEW President, Tony Khan, addressed Sting’s surprise appearance on the AEW WrestleDream post-show media scrum, saying that even though The Icon has retired, he’s still a very big part of AEW and will remain close with the promotion. Check out Khan’s full comments here.
