Rey Mysterio Reveals Why He Left WWE In 2015
Rey Mysterio has lifted the lid on why he chose to leave WWE in 2015 and says his wrestling career will end in the company.
Mysterio had made a name for himself in the United States as the standout star in WCW’s cruiserweight division in the nineties. Following the closure of WCW in 2001, Rey Mysterio eventually debuted in WWE in 2002, making a huge splash on SmackDown.
Since then he was won the Royal Rumble and was crowned World Heavyweight Champion at a hugely emotional WrestleMania 22 before becoming WWE Champion later in his career.
In 2015, however, the sun seemed to set on Rey Mysterio’s time in WWE and he left the company but returned just three years later.
Speaking to The National, Rey Mysterio explained the reason he wanted to leave WWE at the time and it all came down to family:
“I left because I was just tired physically, mentally and I just wanted to reconnect with my family. But I always knew that I wanted to come back and I wanted to retire in the WWE. My career was definitely going to end in WWE, no matter what.”
Mysterio did appear at the All In event that is widely seen as the pre-cursor to AEW but signed full-time with WWE again just a couple of weeks later and says he never wanted to be anywhere else:
“I never really had any desire to go anywhere else. It has always been the WWE. Now I know the WWE has always been my home. And, not only for me but for my son as well and for my family. You know, we’ve been part of the WWE brand for 20 years. And, it’s once you get to know family, you just don’t turn away from them.”
