Update On Why Rey Mysterio Didn’t Compete In Royal Rumble Match
Rey Mysterio was supposed to be in the Royal Rumble match, but he never appeared and there’s an update on why he missed it.
During the Men’s Royal Rumble match that opened the Royal Rumble PLE event, Rey Mysterio was supposed to be the 17th entrant in the match. However, Rey never appeared in the match.
The 18th man to enter the Royal Rumble was Dominik Mysterio, who is Rey’s son that turned on him several months ago to join The Judgment Day group. Rey was moved to Smackdown to get away from Dominik, but the story has progressed off camera with Dominik attacking Rey in his home and Rey also getting Dominik arrested on Christmas Eve due to his behavior.
When Dominik entered the Royal Rumble match, he had one of Rey’s masks on his head and he threw it down on his way to the ring. The story was done in a way to make it seem like Dominik beat up Rey and stole his mask although we never saw Rey on the show.
In an update on the situation, the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer spoke on his radio show about how Rey suffered an injury on Friday’s Smackdown that was bad enough that he was unable to be in the Men’s Royal Rumble match. As Meltzer discussed, WWE likely wanted to push the story that Dominik injured Rey and that’s why he missed the Rumble rather than putting another wrestler in that spot.
“Rey Mysterio was injured last night in Laredo at the SmackDown tapings in a match with Karrion Kross. He was going to be in the Rumble, that spot was changed and then what happened was they did a spot where he’s supposed to come out, he doesn’t come out, and then Dominik comes out.
“I think they were actually supposed to do some teases with them in the Rumble to set up the WrestleMania match but, obviously, they couldn’t do it because Rey’s injured.”
“Dominik, I guess, the idea was he came out with Rey’s mask with the idea that somehow maybe Judgment Day beat up Rey backstage and Dominik had the mask and that’s the way they are going to do the angle.”
“Hopefully, Rey’s injury isn’t anything serious but I guess it was serious enough that he couldn’t do what was planned in the match.”
As mentioned above, Rey is likely going to face Dominik at WrestleMania in a first-ever match between them. To this point, Dominik has hit Rey many times while Rey has yet to strike his son intentionally. That could change in the weeks ahead.
