People In WWE Pushing For Alberto Del Rio’s Return

Alberto Del Rio WWE

Could controversial ex-WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio really be wanted back by the company following his exit from AAA?

Ahead of WrestleMania 41 night one, WWE announced the acquisition of the famous Mexican Promotion AAA. Michael Cole broke the news during the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, shortly after a new Worlds Collide event involving talent from NXT and AAA was announced. One of AAA’s biggest stars was former WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio, leading to speculation that he could eventually return to the US once again.

It’s been repeatedly reported that WWE had no interest in bringing back Alberto Del Rio, with one source noting there was “no f*cking way” he’d return.

Alberto Del Rio Might Have Too Much Baggage For WWE

Much of the unhappiness surrounding a potential return for Del Rio centres on his life outside the ring. Del Rio has been subject to several claims of domestic and physical abuse, including by former WWE and AEW star Saraya.

In 2020, Del Rio was arrested after being accused of sexual assault and battery. Later that year, he was indicted by a grand jury and charged with aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. The case was ultimately dismissed after a witness failed to appear in court.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that despite his checkered past, there are still people in WWE pushing for his return to the company:

It will be very interesting to see what happens with Alberto because there are many different people with many different ideas on him. Everything from he’s gone, which I don’t expect given the way they put [his AAA exit together] to he’s going to the main roster which I don’t expect but there absolutely are people pushing for that.

I think the idea of the baggage and everything like that…There are people who are very, very impressed with Alberto as far as the way he handles himself as a star. He’s super, super over; he’s the biggest star in the company.
