A rumor has been put to rest regarding a recent promo from the AEW World Champion MJF.

It was a busy episode of AEW Dynamite for the AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman on February 8th. Friedman had a tough match with Konosuke Takeshita that MJF won. Later in the show, the Max also did a backstage promo, appeared on commentary during Bryan Danielson’s win over Rush, and also attacked Danielson in the ring.

During his backstage interview, MJF told a story about being a jerk. He claimed that when he was in high school, he got into a car accident while with a lady friend. When MJF crashed the car, he switched seats with the girl and told the cops that the girl was driving the car, not him. There is apparently some truth to it, but he also embellished some of it because he’s a heel that wants to get booed.

There was a rumor post-Dynamite about how the AEW World Champion’s promo segment wasn’t supposed to be part of the show, but AEW put it on because The Bunny suffered a concussion in her match against Jamie Hayter, so they needed to put something else on the show to fill time.

According to Fightful Select, MJF’s unique backstage promo “was always planned to happen and was listed on the internal run sheets before the show.”

The reason for Max being featured heavily is because he is set to defend the AEW World Championship against Bryan Danielson at AEW Revolution on Sunday, March 5th in a 60-Minute Iron Man Match. Meanwhile, AEW’s Eddie Kingston didn’t enjoy all of MJF’s screen time.
