Mercedes Mone Recalls WWE Rival Getting Emotional Before Big Match
Mercedes Mone has looked back at a time in her WWE career when she faced an opponent who was very emotional before a huge championship match.
For ten years, pro wrestling fans knew Mercedes Mone by the name of Sasha Banks in WWE. During her WWE run, Banks was a leader in the women’s division who was right in the middle of the much talked about Women’s “Evolution” era.
During her run in WWE, Mone held the various versions of the Women’s Championships six times while also winning the Women’s Tag Team Titles three times.
Perhaps the biggest match of Mercedes Mone’s WWE run was when she defended the Smackdown Women’s Championship against Bianca Belair in the main event of WrestleMania 37 Saturday. It was the second time that women headlined wrestler, but the first time it was two black women, and also the first time it was a women’s singles match.
While talking to WTOP, Mone recalled that match with the 2021 Women’s Royal Rumble winner Belair and how Belair’s tears before the match almost led to Mone bursting into tears as well.
“It was so emotional. That was one of my biggest dreams since I was 10 years old, but it was so big I didn’t think it was possible, then here I was at ‘WrestleMania 37’ in the middle of the ring looking at Bianca like, ‘Wow, we are doing this, this is so much bigger than us, bigger than wrestling.’”
“That moment was so special. The way she looked at me, I was like, ‘Girl, you better stop before I start bawling and we slip in the ring from our tears.’”
The two talented women got through the match just fine with Belair getting the big win for her first Women’s Title while Mone put on a great show as a fighting champion.
Mercedes Mone Retains The TBS Title At AEW All In
The confident Mercedes Mone is the current TBS Champion, who retained her championship against Britt Baker during a competitive match at AEW All In at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Up next for Mercedes Mone is a NJPW Strong Women’s Championship title defense at the third annual NJPW Capital Collision event in Washington, DC. Mone defends the title against Momo Watanabe at the show.
Meanwhile, the next AEW pay-per-view is called All Out on September 7th in Chicago. It’s not known if Mone will be wrestling at that show.
