Mercedes Mone Provides Injury Update
Mercedes Mone took to social media to update fans on her recovery after suffering an injury at NJPW Resurgence.
Mercedes Mone made waves when she returned to wrestling in January, making her NJPW debut at Wrestle Kingdom 17 and issuing a challenge to IWGP Women’s Champion KAIRI. She went on to defeat KAIRI for the title at Battle in the Valley in February, but lost the title to Mayu Iwatani in May.
However, amidst reports that she’d extended her time with NJPW, Mone continued to be heavily featured in the promotion. At Resurgence on May 21st, she competed in a tournament to crown the first NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship. Initial plans called for Mone to win the match, and some reports indicated that the title was created specifically for her, but plans changed drastically when the former Sasha Banks suffered an ankle injury after taking an awkward fall off the top turnbuckle.
Mone herself reportedly made the call to change the finish of the match, and Nightingale was crowned champion. It was later reported that she had indeed suffered either a broken or sprained ankle, but the severity could not be determined until swelling went down.
In an update on her Instagram story, Mone posted a photo of her ankle in a cast with the caption “Day 6 recovery,” indicating that she may have had surgery in the past week. A screenshot of the IG story can be seen below.
There is currently no word on when she can be expected to return to the ring, though prior to her injury, there were discussions about her appearing at Forbidden Door.
