Major Young Bucks Storyline Scrapped By AEW

A planned title match for the Young Bucks appears to be cancelled.

At WrestleDream, the Bucks got the better of the Lucha Bros, Orange Cassidy & Hook, and The Gunns to earn a future shot at the AEW World Tag Team Titles. In the eyes of many this was a way of setting up another match between the pair and FTR who were champions at the time.

The Young Bucks and FTR continue to be recognised as two of the best teams in the world, and their previous matches have been hailed as modern classics.

However, creative has changed, and changed in a big way. FTR lost the gold to Big Bill and Ricky Starks, although even then it was believed FTR vs. Young Bucks part four was still on.

Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer outlined how things were scheduled to play out.

“On the tag title front, the plan was definitely FTR vs. Young Bucks 4, but it doesn’t appear that will happen. FTR suggested the loss to Big Bill & Ricky Starks and the idea at that time was it would lead to a rematch and the winners would defend against the Young Bucks.”

Although the Bucks won at WrestleDream that victory hasn’t been mentioned on AEW television, seemingly removing them as number one contenders.

Continuing on, Meltzer broke down how things have changed.

“The belief right now is that everything has changed. The Young Bucks won the four-team match at WrestleDream to earn a tag title match, but when they returned to television this past week, the announcers never brought up them being in line for a tag title or winning that match.

In fact, as best I can tell, the four-way win hasn’t been talked about in weeks. It also could be Big Bill & Ricky Starks in a rematch with FTR on the PPV rather than television. That match was originally set for 10/28 television but there was nothing this week indicating it happening that soon, although they’ve been teasing the rematch for weeks.”

When Were The Young Bucks Last AEW World Tag Team Champions?

The Young Bucks haven’t been AEW World Tag Team Champions since the summer of 2022 when they lost out to Swerve In Our Glory. Their most recent shot at the gold came at All In where they lost out to champions FTR.

Despite this, the pair are currently two-thirds of the ROH Six Man Tag Team Champions along with Hangman Adam Page.
