The Major Difference Between Vince McMahon & Triple H’s WWE Booking
Triple H is now leading WWE creatively following his father-in-law Vince McMahon’s demise in the company but what is the key difference between how they book?
Vince McMahon was forced to resign as Executive Chairman of TKO following a lawsuit filed by an ex-WWE employee accusing McMahon of serious sexual assault. Triple H [Paul Levesque] then became WWE’s lead creative mind, becoming Chief Content Officer and, in reality, ending a power struggle between himself and McMahon that stretched back to Triple H’s heart surgery that took him out of action in 2021.
Triple H has been widely lauded for his creative strategy compared to Vince McMahon’s, and one of the key differences between them was seen on Raw as Sami Zayn came face-to-face with CM Punk.
Triple H Does What Vince McMahon Wouldn’t
The two men have been allies in recent weeks, but Zayn made clear that if Punk won his Money In The Bank qualifier, then won Money In The Bank, and then won the World Heavyweight Championship then Zayn would be waiting for him. But in the end, Punk didn’t even qualify for the match as he lost out to El Grande Americano.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why the face-to-face between Zayn and Punk was indicative of the biggest difference between McMahon and Triple H’s booking strategies:
The difference between Vince and Levesque when it comes to booking is – Vince’s philosophy is do not waste television time building up a match you’re not gonna do. Levesque’s philosophy is build up a whole bunch of stuff to make people think, now they’ve watched this segment, they think Punk’s going to win for sure, so it’s to throw people off in a sense.
They’ve been trained to think that if you hype up a match, then you’re getting it, but this was an example [of that not happening].
