Kofi Kingston Reveals What Vince McMahon Wanted From The New Day
In November 2014, Kofi Kingston, Big E, and Xavier Woods came together to form The New Day.
They were initially met with a lukewarm reception, but they quickly won fans over with their lively personalities, unique charisma, and entertaining promos. The group became known for their fun and positive vibe and catchy entrance with pancakes. Over time, they established themselves as one of WWE’s most popular factions, winning multiple tag team championships.
However, things began to change when Big E suffered a serious injury, a broken neck that sidelined him for a long recovery, in 2022. His injury forced WWE to shift the group’s dynamics, turning Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods into a tag team while Big E was out.
Kofi Kingston Says Vince McMahon Wanted The New Day To Be Like Preachers
The New Day member, Kofi Kingston, recently had an interview Keepin’ It 100 OFFICIAL with Disco Inferno & Konnan, where he revealed what vision former WWE chairman Vince McMahon had for the stable.
“So it was crowds like Philly, crowds like Detroit. There were very specific times where…When we first wanted to be a group, we had gone to Vince and said, “Hey, you know, we wanna be three guys that are really disgruntled with their jobs and they want to come together to be greater than the sum of their parts.” And Vince was like “Hey, that’s cool, but I’d have you be like preachers.”
“But we knew…all of sitting in that room and listening to him talk about how successful that gimmick was gonna be. We knew right away that like, nobody comes to a WWE show to go to church, you know? So they don’t want to be preached at, right? With the chemistry that we had, regardless of what he gave us to do, all we wanted was an opportunity to be on screen, you know?
“We knew that we would shine through…we wanted to be bad guys in the first place. So we came out and people were happy that we were doing something new, but very quickly they turned on us and telling us how much we suck, and we just loved that. That’s what we wanted in the first place, and it kind of worked out better because we weren’t your stereotypical bad guys and we weren’t angry.”
