John Cena’s Startling Revelation About If He Took Pain Pills After Having 10 Surgeries
John Cena has opened up about the physical toll that his body took after two decades in WWE.
As a 17-time WWE World Champion following a 25-year career, John Cena’s accomplishments are celebrated as they should be. However, what isn’t often discussed is how much Cena and other wrestlers beat their bodies up to entertain the fans.
Pro wrestlers work with eachother to put on matches, and they do their best not to hurt eachother, but injuries happen just because the human body isn’t supposed to take thousands of bumps on a mat regularly.
On the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, John Cena spoke about his injury history, which has included neck surgery, a broken nose, and multiple surgeries on his arms. While discussing his injuries, Cena admitted that he has never taken a pill, and he even still has the prescriptions that doctors gave him, but he never needed them.
“I’ve had fusion in my neck, right pec completely detached, reattached both triceps, scoped nose… I’ve had probably 10 physical surgeries where they got to go and correct something. Never taken one pain pill.
I have all the prescriptions in the bottom drawer of my house filled. Some are labeled 2008.
The worst one was probably putting the whole pec back on and then attaching it. When I woke up, I was able to mess around with a stress ball, and I never took one pill. The medical staff couldn’t believe it.
It’s a f**king slippery slope. I would just be high on opioids all the time. It’s kind of your body’s natural way of saying, ‘Okay, maybe push a little bit more, try to get a few more degrees of range of motion.’ If those senses are numbed and shut off… you won’t work to do the work to get better… You can’t listen to your body.”
John Cena Believes His Upbringing Has Helped His Pain Tolerance
Regarding his pain tolerance level, John Cena believes that having brothers with whom he fought a lot growing up ended up helping him a lot.
“I grew up with four brothers, and we kicked the s**t out of each other. I was not always on the winning side.
There’s some value into losing a fight. Just flat out getting your ass kicked and then being able to dust yourself off and be like, ‘I’ll get you next time.’”
Cena would go on to talk about the physical toll that wrestlers go through.
“I get such a feeling when first-timers go into the ring for the first time. They fall down once and like the wind’s knocked out of them, like, ‘My brain moved.’ Now, you gotta do that again and again.”
“When we’re in WWE, we’re working together to put on the best show. In that process, you can calculate the risks. The math is way higher for you to have a 10, 15, 20-year career [in] WWE, but that also is 10 more years of falling down, 15 more years of falling down.”
John Cena’s final WWE match will be at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th in Washington, D.C., where he’ll face the Last Time Is Now Tournament winner – LA Knight or Gunther.
