Why John Cena Thought His WWE Heel Turn Was A Losing Battle
John Cena has opened up about the part of his recent heel run in WWE that left him fighting a battle he just couldn’t win.
At Elimination Chamber, John Cena shocked the world when he turned heel on Cody Rhodes, aligning himself with The Rock and Travis Scott ahead of his WrestleMania title match against Rhodes.
Cena went on to blame the fans for his turn, saying that they abandoned him several years ago, this was despite them loudly cheering him as he embarked on the final year of his WWE career. At WrestleMania, Cena won his record-breaking 17th WWE Title from Rhodes with help from Travis Scott, but The Rock was nowhere to be seen.
Cena held the title over the summer but was forced to get back in the ring with Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam with the gold on the line. Just days before that match, Cena completely dropped his heel turn, blaming those who set him up for it, then abandoning him. Rhodes reclaimed the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, with Cena raising his hand to show his respect after the match.
John Cena Couldn’t Fight Fan Reaction
At Clash In Paris, John Cena had the fans firmly behind him as he took on Logan Paul. Cena picked up the win over Paul and now only has 8 dates left to fulfil as a WWE Superstar.
Speaking on the Clash in Paris post-show, Cena discussed his heel turn and why it was ultimately dropped, admitting he was losing a fighting battle against fan reaction to him:
Keep in mind, what we do is try to entertain the audience as best we can, and sometimes, that involves taking risks and sometimes, that takes being bold. You also have to listen to the audience. It got to a point where, Cena vs. Randy, you start hearing this.
Cena vs. Punk in Saudi, you start hearing the noise. Cena-Cody WrestleMania, Cena-Cody SummerSlam, it changes. Sometimes, you can make bold and brave new moves, but going against this body of energy is a losing battle. So sometimes, you just gotta listen and pivot, change course.
