John Cena Explains Why He Wears Jorts When Wrestling In WWE
John Cena has come up with a good explanation for why he wore jorts during his legendary WWE career.
Many people are feeling nostalgic when it comes to John Cena these days since he announced recently that 2025 will be his final year as a WWE in-ring competitor. The 47-year-old Cena has made it clear his final match will happen in December 2025.
Since joining the WWE main roster in 2002, Cena incorporated several different looks over the last 22 years, but he also settled on wearing jorts (aka jean shorts) during his matches. It’s not a popular look for a pro wrestler, but the future WWE Hall of Famer Cena did his best to make it work.
While answering questions for WIRED on YouTube when answering the most Googled questions, John Cena explained that jorts became his ring gear because they don’t rip like other materials.
“I do. I wear jorts often. I also wear suits often. I enjoy a suit. The jorts are more for work. I’ve been wearing them for over 20 years.”
“It started as a way to help define my character. It was a character based in hip hop culture and hip hop fashion. Way back, 20 years ago, was the end of the large baggy jean short era.”
“I’ve tried many other forms of shorts. I always like to wrestle in street clothes because I think it sets me apart from other performers and helps people attach to the personality. Cargo shorts and any other material except denim rip. We run a family program. For young folks to see the ugly bits too soon is just not a way to grow up.”
When talking about his wardrobe choices in the past, John Cena also revealed that he also has a drawstring belt on his shorts rather than a belt buckle, which can hurt you.
John Cena Doesn’t Plan On Having One More Match After Retirement
It’s not known yet when John Cena will have his next WWE match, but the former 16-time World Champion has made it clear he’ll be done as a wrestler when he has his final match in December 2025.
“There isn’t a check writer with enough money to change my mind when I hang it up in December. I don’t want to continue for ego or financial gain.”
“I built a relationship of trust and authenticity over the years with the WWE, and that’s people who think I suck and people who believe in me, they know that I shoot them straight and I’m trustworthy. I mean what I say: when I’m done in December, I am done. It is the last time I will perform in a ring.”
As his career in Hollywood continues to grow, Cena also made it clear he would like to see more wrestling stories that become movies in the years ahead.
