John Cena Reveals Reason Behind Retiring From WWE
17-time WWE World Champion John Cena is one of the most beloved wrestlers to ever step foot in a ring. He is all set to hang up his boots at the end of this week, bringing an end to an extremely successful 23-year in-ring career.
He is set to face Gunther in his final ever WWE match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025, bringing an end to his retirement tour, which saw him break Ric Flair’s record of 16 World Championships and finally win the Intercontinental Championship.
WWE recently released John Cena’s interview with Tom Rinaldi on their YouTube channel, right after the end of tonight’s RAW. He spoke on various topics during the interview, and in one of the conversations, he revealed why he chose to retire this year.
John Cena is upholding the promise he made to WWE
In the interview with Tom Rinadi, Cena explained that he promised WWE that he wouldn’t stick around when his skills don’t match the product, and he feels that at 48 years old, he’s reached that stage.
“I made a promise to the WWE that I would not stick around when my skills can’t match the product, and they can’t. Like I’m 48. I can’t match up with the product now, and that’s okay, because what I do isn’t who I am. And, the realization has helped me come to like, “no, let these guys have it now” because they’re really good, and all I would be doing is a disservice to the consumer, if I go any point beyond this.” Cena said.
In his 23 years with the company, John Cena won numerous titles along the way and finally managed to become a Grand Slam Champion in the final month of his career. While he is retiring from in-ring action, he will continue to be a part of WWE.
