John Cena Or Gunther? KOTR Winner Expected To Fight This Champion

The winner of the KOTR Tournament may have to make a choice.

WWE kicked off its KOTR Tournament this week. The winner of the tournament will get a title shot at SummerSlam. As things stand, it looks like the title opportunity will be against either Gunther or John Cena.

The first round of the King Of The Ring Tournament is underway. The first match of the tournament took place on WWE RAW. Sami Zayn, Penta, Bron Breakker and Dominik Mysterio were pitted against each other in a fatal fourway match. Towards the end, Breakker took out Penta with a Spear outside the ring, after which LA Knight attacked Breakker. Zayn capitalized on the situation, hitting Mysterio with the Helluva Kick and pinning him.

On Notsam Wrestling, Sam Roberts discussed the KOTR tournament. Since the winner of the tournament will get a title shot at SummerSlam, he claimed that the winner may go after Gunther and not John Cena, because Cena may have plans in the works for him.

“Things like Kong Of The Ring, Royal Rumble, things that establish a natural challenger, it always ends up being, if Gunther is one of the two champions, Gunther is usually the one to do it. So, for some reason, it feels like whoever wins that King Of The Ring tournament will go for Gunther because there will be some other story going on with John Cena with whoever he fights at SummerSlam.” [18:08 – 18:30]

Will The WWE Universe See Gunther Vs John Cena?

During the same podcast, Sam Roberts realised that Crown Jewel will be in October. WWE will most probably have another set of matches to determine the Crown Jewel Champions. Those matches will see the top two champions from both brands clash against each other to determine which is the better competitor. If The Ring General and The Last Real Champion manage to hold on to their title till the PLE, they may face off in a one-on-one match.

Can you imagine if John Cena actually does hold on to that title up until October and now you would go into Crown Jewel: Perth with Gunther vs. Cena, champion vs. champion? Your two champions now are Gunther vs. Cena. Everybody’s heels. Gunther’s a heel. Cena’s a heel. Seth Rollins with the briefcase is a heel.
