Jim Ross Reveals That He Always Knew Edge Would Be The ‘Breakout Star’ Between Himself & Christian

Jim Ross has revealed that he always knew Edge would be the ‘clear’ number one when it came to the duo of Edge & Christian adding “I always thought Edge was going to be a breakout star.”

Edge & Christian may currently compete on rival brodcasting with Edge a staple of WWE SmackDown & Christian breaking through as part of AEW’s growing roster but they were at one point arguably one of wrestling’s greatest tag teams.

The pair eventually split up in 2001 after Christian became jealous of Edge for winning that year’s King of the Ring tournament and turned his back on his kayfabe brother. After going their separate ways, Edge became the more successful of the two, having a long run in the main event scene and holding the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships a combined total of 11 times. Christian, meanwhile, won the World Heavyweight Championship twice. He left WWE for a time to join TNA, now IMPACT Wrestling, where he had two reigns as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

On an episode of ‘Grilling JR’ looking at WWE Unforgiven 2001, where Christian defeated Edge to capture the Intercontinental Championship, the legendary commentator explained that he always expected Edge to be the bigger star because of the way he connected with the audience.

“I always thought Edge was going to be a breakout star because he connected with the audience, and Jay [Jay Reso, Christian’s real name] was always the clear number two on that team. So I was glad they both got their opportunity to grow on their own, but I always thought that Edge had a little bit of a leg up in that scenario, but that does not mean by any stretch of the imagination that Christian wasn’t a very good hand.”

Christian recently made the shocking jump to All Elite Wrestling just months after competing in the WWE following his Royal Rumble return, his most high profile feud being a multi-month programme with reigning AEW Champion Kenny Omega that saw Captain Charisma capture the TNA & IMPACT World Championship’s before unifying the belts on his return to IMPACT Wrestling.

Edge and Christian were able to make one final appearance together in WWE in January 2021 when Christian stepped in the ring for the first time since he retired due to medical issues in 2014 to enter the Royal Rumble match. The former champions embraced in the ring, with Edge later saying he was “so proud” of Christian for the work he had done to get back in action.
