Jake Roberts Recalls Being Shocked He Wasn’t Part Of The 2014 Royal Rumble
WWE legend Jake Roberts has revealed that he was stunned when he received the call informing him of his WWE Hall of Fame induction, as he initially believed the company was reaching out for a Royal Rumble return.
Speaking to The Undertaker on Six Feet Under, Jake Roberts recalled the moment he was given the life-changing news.
“I couldn’t believe it, I was shell-shocked briefly. I thought they were calling me to go into the Royal Rumble, I thought that’s what they wanted.”
At the time, Roberts had been working tirelessly to regain his physical conditioning. Training under Diamond Dallas Page and following the DDP Yoga programme, he had shed between 50 and 60 pounds, feeling revitalised and ready for an in-ring comeback.
“That was my goal, and I’d lost, I don’t know, 50 or 60 pounds and was feeling pretty snappy. I thought that’s what they were calling for.”
In the months leading up to the 2014 Royal Rumble, Roberts had made occasional wrestling appearances, sparking speculation among fans that he might be a surprise entrant in the match. However, WWE had different plans, opting to honour his legendary career with an induction into the Hall of Fame instead.
Although he never had the chance to compete in another Royal Rumble, Roberts remained active in wrestling, continuing to appear on the independent circuit until 2018. His Hall of Fame induction served as a fitting tribute to a career that influenced generations of wrestlers and fans alike.
