Huge AEW Dynamite Botch Finally Explained

AEW logo over blurred Shelton Benjamin

A recent match ending on AEW Dynamite was messed up due to a communication issue.

On the November 19th edition of AEW Dynamite, Shelton Benjamin faced “Speedball” Mike Bailey in a match to determine the second entrant in the Casino Gauntlet Match set to take place at AEW Full Gear on November 22nd.

The two veteran wrestlers had a competitive match with a sloppy finish. After Bailey got a rollup for two, Shelton hit a superkick that Bailey sold great with a flip bump. The referee, Paul Turner, counted two and stopped while claiming Bailey’s shoulder got up…even though it clearly did not go up.

Shelton’s ally, MVP, went into the ring thinking that was it, but was told it was not. The match kept going as Benjamin hit a German Suplex, knee strike, and superkick for the pinfall win after 12 minutes.

AEW Dynamite Match Finish Changed On The Fly

While addressing the match finish on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez explained that Benjamin changed the finish on the fly because of how well Bailey sold the first superkick. However, AEW referee Paul Turner apparently didn’t know about the change, so he stopped counting.

“The finish was gonna be a superkick. Shelton ends up shooting him in, and he hits this kick, and Speedball just takes this incredible full flip bump, and it looks like he’s dead.

“So Shelton decides, ‘It ain’t gonna get better than that,’ and so Shelton calls the audible, ‘This is the finish.’

“Apparently the ref didn’t hear him, and so the ref stops the count because that wasn’t actually supposed to be the finish.

“So you could say it’s the referees fault. You could say it’s Shelton’s fault. You can’t say it’s Speedball’s fault, he just laid there like he was supposed to.

“It was a miscommunication, and when the referee stopped, they just went on and did the actual finish.

“He did not get concussed by the kick or anything like that. There was no injury involved. It was just Shelton thought a move looked really cool and that they should just go to the finish right there, and the ref didn’t hear him.”

By winning the match, Benjamin is the number two entry in the Casino Gauntlet Match at Full Gear, while his Hurt Syndicate ally Bobby Lashley is the first entrant in the match.
