Gunther Explains Real Reason For Imminent WWE Return

Gunther WWE

Gunther has sent a strong message as he is on the verge of returning to a WWE ring for the first time in months.

The last time WWE fans saw Gunther in action was back at SummerSlam when he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk. Punk’s reign came to a swift halt, however, as Seth Rollins cashed in his Money In The Bank contract to leave MetLife Stadium with the title.

During The Ring General’s absence from the ring, Seth Rollins was forced to vacate the title due to injury, with CM Punk recapturing the gold, but Gunther’s immediate attention will be elsewhere.

The Austrian star is returning to be a part of the 16-man Last Time Is Now tournament for the chance to be John Cena’s final opponent. Gunther’s opponent for the first-round tournament match in Madison Square Garden will be NXT’s Je’Von Evans.

Gunther Upbeat For MSG Comeback

In a new video on social media, Gunther explained he’s returning to the company to raise the quality in WWE, and he’s looking forward to it:

The Ring General is back on duty to raise the quality in WWE. I’ve had a bit of a break, fixed my nose and now I’m here in the beautiful Switzerland at the airport in Zurich, I’m about to head to New York City.

There couldn’t be better timing to come back and participate in the tournament that will determine John Cena’s final opponent at the Madison Square Garden in one of my absolute favorite arenas. I’m looking forward to it, I’m back again.

Gunther is among the favourites to be Cena’s final opponent, and it could be a case of history repeating itself as he also retired WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in July 2025.
