GUNTHER Reveals If He Lost Intercontinental Title To The Right Wrestler

GUNTHER WWE Promo

The former Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has reacted to the end of his legendary title reign by discussing if he lost the title to the right person.

For nearly two years, GUNTHER had a reign as the most dominant Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. At WrestleMania 40, Gunther lost his championship to Sami Zayn in a match that many people considered one of the best matches during WrestleMania weekend.

The win by Zayn meant that Gunther’s 666-day reign as the longest Intercontinental Champion in WWE history was over. One of the other wrestlers in contention for the title was Chad Gable, who came close to beating Gunther in the past, but Zayn beat Gable in a Gauntlet Match to earn the shot and Zayn used that momentum to beat Gunther as well.

While Zayn is popular with the WWE fans, Zayn is a four-time Intercontinental Champion. As for Gable, he’s never held a singles title in his WWE career.

In an interview with Gorilla Position, the former IC Champ Gunther weighed in on the topic of whether he lost his championship to the right opponent.

“I don’t think there was one right person. I think there would have been a few options. Chad is the other one that would have made a lot of sense. Sami is definitely one of those where it was ‘he’s the right guy to do it.’ He’s absolutely a fantastic professional wrestler. He has the natural connection with the audience. He’s really the underdog that people can connect with and understand the struggle.”

“It’s naturally the personality he is. He doesn’t look like the perfect athlete. That’s not who he is or ever was. That also adds to the people having a connection because basically nobody in our audience is a perfect person. It’s a very human thing to not be perfect. It’s very easy to connect with it and to go through those struggles with that person.”

“On top of that, he’s fantastic in the ring and has been for years. To do the match with him at the biggest stage possible and go out in the biggest way possible, I was very happy with that. It was a very successful ending to that reign.”

GUNTHER Is Focused On Becoming King Of The Ring

During his first WWE Raw promo since losing the IC Title, Gunther made it clear that he was ready to move on and wanted to be the King of the Ring.

As for where he goes next, Gunther will be eligible to be drafted this coming Monday, April 29th on Raw where we will learn if he’ll remain a Raw guy or move to Smackdown.
