Gunther Faces Huge Challenge At WrestleMania
Sheamus and Drew McIntyre clashed on SmackDown to find a WrestleMania challenger for WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther but after he got involved in the bout, he now faces double trouble in LA.
A five-way match took place previously on SmackDown to find a number one contender for Gunther but when Drew McIntyre and Sheamus both laid claim to victory, Gunther demanded a single challenger be found for him.
That led to McIntyre and Sheamus facing off in a singles bout on SmackDown in Kansas City but that match also failed to find a bona fide winner. Imperium’s Giovanni Vince and Ludwig Kaiser attacked both men simultaneously causing the referee to throw the match out.
WWE official Adam Pearce then appeared on the screen to inform Gunther that as a result, he will be part of a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania where he will defend his gold against both men.
Drew McIntyre was previously Intercontinental Champion in his first run with the company, losing the gold in May 2010 to Kofi Kingston. Sheamus has never held the title and it is one that accolade that has eluded him in his WWE career having held every other title available to him as well as winning a Royal Rumble match, Money In The Bank, and the King of the Ring tournament.
Gunther is currently in the midst of the seventh-longest Intercontinental Championship reign of all time but by the time WrestleMania 39 rolls around, the Austrian star will move into fifth place on that list behind Don Muraco, Randy Savage, Pedro Morales, and The Honky Tonk Man.
