Goldberg Blasted By WWE Personality For Complaining
Bill Goldberg’s complaints about his WWE retirement match have led to an announcer in the company to go off on the Hall of Famer.
In a match that was billed as a retirement match, Bill Goldberg lost to the World Heavyweight Champion Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta.
The two men engaged in a physical match that lasted 14 minutes, with Goldberg executing big moves like the Spear and his finishing move, the Jackhammer. However, Gunther was able to wear down the 58-year-old by working over a knee injury and putting Goldberg in a sleeper to force the submission win.
After the match, Goldberg gave a speech in the ring, surrounded by friends and family. However, he was only given about 25 seconds before the show ended on NBC, as it was right at 10 p.m. ET. On WWE’s YouTube channel, a 10-minute version of Bill’s speech was posted, which has garnered over 1 million views in just three days.
While speaking on Ariel Helwani’s show, Goldberg complained about how WWE presented his final match.
“I mean, the Saturday night’s Main Event and live TV in Atlanta. I mean, you always have your dreams of how you’re going to do things, and ultimately to have a little bit more control over the time and the space would have been much more preferred. Let’s just put it that way…
I mean, I can’t say that I was too thrilled about part of that… Freaking 20 seconds with the microphone in my hand, for God’s sakes.
The entire rundown, from the inception of the idea to its delivery. It was a little less than to be desired, but for the again, I’m not going to complain, because nobody, not many people, get that opportunity… I get two weeks, man, I get two weeks before I can really, you know, spill the beans and, you know, make my feelings kind of known about the entire rundown.
Let’s just say I’m p*ssed off at the way I went out. I put so much into it and I don’t feel as though the effort was reciprocated to put a stamp on what I’ve accomplished. I think it could have been done a little bit differently. That’s all. I’m happy with my performance. I’m happy with the setting, you know, but could it have been better? Absolutely. It can always be better.”
Goldberg Should Have Been Squashed By Gunther, According To Peter Rosenberg
Peter Rosenberg is a radio personality in the New York area who also works for WWE on PLE pre- and post-shows. Rosenberg also calls the action on WWE Evolve.
In a video posted on X/Twitter, Rosenberg criticized Goldberg for his comments bashing how WWE presented the Saturday Night’s Main Event match.
“I cannot believe the complaints about his sendoff. Have you guys ever noticed that the people who are the most overbooked, the most over celebrated are always the ones who complain?
The man got a 15-minute match. It should have been a squash let’s be honest. He should have gotten Goldberg’ed. He should have been speared and taken out. The man’s pushing 60 years old, hasn’t looked good in the ring, some would say, ever, but certainly not in the last few years.”
As he continued, Rosenberg addressed the complaint about not having a chance to talk at the end of the show.
“He still got in a nice little moment and got to be celebrated. First of all, people watch the product. NBC goes when the show ends, every single time. They do not wait. NBC. This is network TV. It’s not USA, it’s not Netflix. It’s NBC. They go when they go.”
Rosenberg went on to point out that a lot of wrestlers don’t get any send-off at all.
“Do you know how many people better than Goldberg, their send off was ‘we wish them the best in their future endeavors?’ Did this guy get to stand in the ring on national television? Have a send off? You should be thanking your lucky stars for the money you’ve made and the appreciation you’ve gotten, which many don’t even feel is fully deserved. To complain, I’m so disappointed.”
Goldberg has teased that he can say more about it in two weeks, which likely means there was some deal that he signed that would carry him through July, and then he’ll become a free agent in wrestling, which could lead to another match if he wants to do it.
I respect Goldberg and he seems like a decent man but WTF was he thinking man? He has been collecting check after check against top guys and putting on mediocre matches … and gets a hell of a send off. And then complains?? I'm lost pic.twitter.com/UCUlIipdQe
