Ex-WWE Star Wants Return Despite Abandoned Last Run
Davey Boy Smith Jr. is open to returning to WWE to show what he can do over a decade after his first run with the company.
Davey Boy Smith Jr originally joined WWE back in 2007. Known as David Hart Smith, the son of the British Bulldog went on to form The Hart Dynasty with Tyson Kidd and Natalya. Smith and Kidd became a key part of the tag team division, winning the WWE Tag Titles twice in 2010. However, after the pair split the following year, Smith’s appearances began to dwindle and he was mostly seen on Superstars before finally being released in August 2011.
Following his release, Smith competed all over the world, with successful runs in the likes of NJPW, Pro Wrestling NOAH, and Major League Wrestling. In 2021, he made a brief return to WWE but only wrestled one dark match before once again being let go.
In 2023, Davey Boy Smith Jr underwent emergency surgery for appendicitis and diverticulitis. After his recovery, he began making appearances for All Japan Pro Wrestling, where he is now the reigning Triple Crown Champion.
During an appearance on the HUGE POP! podcast, Smith admitted that part of him would like to return to WWE to show what he can do now that he has more experience behind him.
“Yeah, there is (that part me that wants another WWE run to show what I can do). That would have to depend on the… I mean, Jimmy (Korderas) knows, a lot of things in wrestling are just timing. Ted DiBiase was the right guy, right place, right time for what Vince (McMahon) wanted and he was there, you know?
“So, Bret (Hart) happened to be there at a time, pivotal time in the company when they were pushing smaller talent with all the scandals that were going on and stuff but, I’ll get away from that but I’m just saying, so you know, there could be a point where I’m just the guy for whatever position that they need to come in and fill.”
Any return to WWE would depend on Smith’s upcoming decision on whether to renew his contract with AJPW. The star believes the company is going through a period of growth, and wants to continue helping with that.
“But, all that I have asked for is the opportunity and a fair chance with some momentum behind it and you never say never. It is possible. I’ll have to see going into 2025. I know All Japan wants to do another six months or one-year deal with me so, maybe it’s good to do that for another six months and then see, or, All Japan might be…with me here and the amount of success, the growth that both me and the company have been having. For those viewers that are watching, All Japan has been selling out Korakuen Hall every single time I’ve been on it. I can’t even get two comp tickets for friends over here.
“Again, a lot of the other wrestling companies over here, they can’t say that so that’s saying a big thing, and it’s great to see. I’m glad to be a part of that movement and improvement with the company so, but you know what? Hey, maybe I’m a big part of All Japan growing again and they start bringing over a lot of other gaijin and the company starts expanding like it really was back in the early, mid-90s so, I’m not exactly 100% sure. I’ll have to see but, it definitely is possible and I just would like a fair chance and an opportunity.”
Davey Boy Smith Jr Didn’t Care To Watch WWE British Bulldog Documentary
Davey Boy Smith Jr had no interest in watching the WWE documentary on his father that was four years in the making. News of the documentary first surfaced in late 2020, but there were numerous delays on its release. It eventually formed part of the Legends series on A&E Network. While Smith was excited for fans to see it, he couldn’t bring himself to care about it because the company didn’t care enough to finish it in good time.
