Ex-WWE Champion Says John Cena Played Major Part In His Release

A former WWE superstar believes that John Cena played a part in his release from the company.

Ken Kennedy is one of the biggest “what if” wrestlers in WWE history. He’s a guy who, at one point, was going to win the World Heavyweight Title as a Money in the Bank briefcase holder, but an injury prevented that from happening, and it turns out it was a minor injury after all, so he still should have gotten that moment.

There was another time in his career when Kennedy was going to be announced as Vince McMahon’s illegitimate son and get a significant push after, but that was taken away after a steroid purchasing scandal.

In May 2009, Kennedy was released by WWE after a tag team match when he gave Randy Orton a belly-to-back suplex. Orton was dealing with shoulder issues, so Orton smacked the mat hard and was visibly upset about it. Days later, Kennedy was let go.

During his WWE run, Kennedy was a United States Champion, and he was also the 2007 Money in the Bank winner, which was the third year that the Money in the Bank briefcase was in play.

After his WWE run, Kennedy went to TNA, where he became a two-time TNA World Champion using his real name, Ken Anderson, and he had some memorable feuds with the likes of Sting, Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, and others.

John Cena Had A Role In Ken Kennedy’s WWE Release

On his Mic Check podcast, the former Ken Kennedy spoke about how John Cena tore his pectoral muscle during a match they had. This would have been in 2007, which led to Cena’s return at the Royal Rumble in 2008, which Cena won as a surprise entrant. According to Ken, he had nothing to do with the injury.

“Was I perceived among my peers any different after the incident with Cena where he accidentally tore his pectoral muscle? Everybody knew I had nothing to do with that.”

While speaking about his release, Ken spoke about how people always think that Randy Orton was more responsible for his release, but Ken made it clear that John Cena had a big role in it as well. However, Ken has moved on from it since it was so long ago.

“About the Randy Orton and John Cena situation in WWE and my release—everyone always asks about the Randy Orton part of that story. But I’ll say this, John was way more involved than Randy Orton, I would say.

It’s honestly not a negative thing to be right now. It literally just is what it is, and yeah, I have no negative emotions surrounding it now.”
