Ex-WWE Figure Thinks Company Wants To Erase Ric Flair
A famous Ric Flair record could soon be gone.
Despite the controversy that regularly surrounds him, for many Ric Flair remains the measuring stick that all professional wrestlers need to be measured against. He shared the ring with many of the biggest names the industry has ever seen, and arguably no one has ever “lived the gimmick” like the Nature Boy.
There is also his record 16 World Championships, although Flair claims the real number could be 21 and some historians have claimed the true figure might be as high as 25. But the number 16 is recognised by WWE and he currently shares that record with John Cena.
Since Cena equaled the record in 2017, the likes of Randy Orton, Charlotte Flair, and Cena himself have been tipped to reach that elusive 17th World Championship.
John Cena Tipped To Surpass Ric Flair
Speaking in a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, former WWE announcer Jonathan Coachman said he believes Cena will break the record before he retires in 2025. Although he thinks that has as much to do with WWE trying to remove Flair from their records, as it does Cena’s greatness.
“I think he wins at WrestleMania, because I think, and this may be controversial to say as well, but the way Ric Flair has moved the last couple of years, people love him. I have a great affection for him.
He every so often, ‘I’m going to retire. I’m going to retire. I’m going to retire.’ He’s now, what, nearly 80 years old and he’s still out there hawking weed and doing all these things.
I just don’t know if at the end of the day, and this is very petty if they do this, but I don’t know if the powers that be at WWE want Ric to be that name that’s always at the top of the mountain.”
Jonathan Coachman has previously claimed that Ric Flair’s famous record means “nothing.” Coach quipped that he could have been a 17-time World Champion if management felt like it.
Flair hasn’t appeared on WWE television since inducting The Great Muta into the Hall of Fame in 2023. His most recent on-screen role came with AEW where he took part in Sting’s last match at Revolution 2024.
Back in July, it was reported that Ric Flair’s multi-year agreement with AEW had quietly been brought to an end.
